Regional Transit Authority (RTA)
North County Planning Internship: January 2014 – July 2014
The proposed intern for the San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will report to the Manager of Marketing and Service Planning. The assignments will focus on short-term bus transit service changes, namely involving in house support on many of the steps leading to actual implementation.
Duties of this position will support the implementation of a major bus transit consolidation in the North County portion of the RTA service area. This will be a major transition from three (3) operators to a single fixed-route provider in the North County with the two municipal services merged within the regional transit system.
Candidate must be self directed and will be expected to complete special projects requiring graphics, web-design and other computer skills. The selected intern will have direct interaction with the transit community and advisory bodies such as the Regional Transit Advisory Committee.
1. Branding Options and Outreach
The intern will assist the RTA manager to develop branding options for local and express services in the North County area. Several options will be laid out and presented to the two local Cities; once the two agencies’ feedback has been received, refinements made, further comments will be sought from the Regional Transit Advisory Committee (RTAC) and Regional Rideshare (the regional body coordinating marketing and outreach among all transit providers).2. 2. Brochure and Map
The intern will assist the RTA manager in crafting a new North County transit map and brochure, using the branding from Sub Task 2-1. This map will replace the three (3) separate route maps issued by the two Cities and the RTA. The new map will show the recommended new bus stops along several legs of the expanded regional route. A presentation of this new North County collateral will be made to the Marketing, Outreach and Ridership Development Group, led by Regional Rideshare under the regional mobility management program. Based on the feedback received, revisions or additions will be made to the proposed map and brochure.
3. New Website(s)
After the completion of a North County transit map and brochure, the intern will support the update to websites for North County transit services. The current links for the Cities of Atascadero and Paso Robles will be revised to display the new consolidated transit services (local within a City, regional with local stops and regional express routes) under the RTA umbrella. Also in need of update will be the Google Transit Trip Planner, currently accessible on the Regional Rideshare webpage, the RTA webpage and the two Cities transit links.
4. Joint Marketing and Public Information Campaign
The intern will assist the RTA project manager and local Cities’ transit staff in disseminating the new service information to the public. This effort will be coordinated with Regional Rideshare using their regional e-newsletter and web alerts. The intern will prepare flyers to be posted on regional and local buses, at pass sales outlets and libraries; press releases will be sent to media outlets and announcements made at City Councils and Chambers of Commerce meetings. Other venues will include senior groups’ events, farmers markets and schools’ regularly scheduled gatherings. The intern will help to develop display boards for several open houses to be held in North County communities, including the Cuesta College satellite campus in Paso Robles.
5. Changes at Bus Stops
Working from a list of new bus stops to be served by regional buses after the service change, the intern will assist in coordination with local agencies in the timely replacement of old signs and time point schedule displays at both existing and new stops. The intern will also prepare an inventory of all passenger amenities by stop along the revised regional route (benches, shelters and kiosks).
Expected hours per week: 15-20
Pay Level: $15-18/hour depending on previous experience
Schedule: Flexible and may require some weekend and evening duties.
This project posting will expire at 9am on Tuesday, December 3rd with interviews the week of December 9th and final selection by December 16th. Candidates will be expected to begin work early January, 2014 through early August 2014.
